Wear assessment, maintenance, and replacement standards for guide column and guide sleeve of die-casting molds
The guide column guide sleeve is the die casting mold guide core, and wear and displacement can cause misalignment, flying edges, and damage to the mold cavity. Xinfeng Machinery has organized, inspected, and replaced the standard.

1、 Reference for clearance between guide column and guide sleeve
The single-sided clearance of the standard die-casting mold guide column guide sleeve is 0.010-0.020mm, and the clearance decreases after high-temperature expansion. Continuous production of molds with heat, dust, and aluminum shavings entering the mating surface can accelerate tearing and wear. When the measured unilateral clearance exceeds 0.04mm, the guiding accuracy fails and the risk of mold misalignment increases significantly. This threshold is a commonly used replacement reference line in the industry. The large-sized alloy wheel mold has a larger guiding load and a higher wear rate than the small-sized shell mold.

2、 Early identification signal of wear and tear
Early signals: continuous flying edge on one side of the parting surface, periodic gnawing on the sealing surface of the slider, and scraping noise during mold closing. Many operators prioritize adjusting the locking force to cover up the burrs, without checking for guide wear. Over time, they directly damage the sealing position of the mold cavity, resulting in a significant increase in repair costs. Opening the mold cleaning guide component every 10000 to 20000 times is a basic maintenance action.

3、 Lubrication, dust prevention and daily maintenance plan
Choose high-temperature resistant directional lubricating grease, ordinary butter undergoes high-temperature carbonization and carbon deposition, which wraps around aluminum shavings to form grinding paste, accelerating strain. Install dust rings and dust covers to prevent aluminum shavings and mold release agent water mist from entering the fitting gap. The low pressure casting mold has a low opening and closing frequency, low impact, and the wear rate of the guide column and guide sleeve is about 45% lower than that of the die-casting mold. The maintenance cycle is longer.

4、 Selection and judgment of strain repair
Minor scratches can be polished and buffed; If there are grooves, peeling, or roundness issues, it is not recommended to repair them. Instead, replace the entire set of guide columns and sleeves. Replacing one of the parts separately will cause misalignment, and the old and new parts will wear out quickly when paired. Standardized maintenance requires paired replacement. Many factories only replace the guide sleeve to save money, which can be used in the short term. However, after thousands of mold cycles, there may be a deviation in the guide.

5、 Differences in MIM Precision Mold Guidance System
Metal injection mold has higher guiding accuracy, smaller clearance, and uses ball guides, suitable for precise positioning of small cavities. Its impact load is much lower than that of die-casting molds. Google's "die casting mold guide pin bushing wear" is suitable for attracting on-site maintenance personnel.

FAQ
Will the wear of the guide column and guide sleeve directly damage the mold cavity? Guiding deviation, misalignment of the mold, and direct damage to the sealing position of the parting surface.

How often do we inspect the guidance components? Continuous production of molds requires 10000 mold inspections, while intermittent production can extend the cycle.

Should the dust ring be replaced immediately if it is damaged? Suggest replacing immediately, as aluminum shavings entering the gap can quickly strain the mating surface.

What are the commonly used materials for guide columns and guide sleeves? Conventional SKD61 quenching, high load molds will use carburized bearing steel.

Can we polish the guide column to reduce its diameter and continue using it? Not recommended, the hardness drops sharply after the surface quenching layer is worn off, and the wear accelerates rapidly.

Is it easy for the low-pressure wheel hub mold guide to break? The opening and closing impact is small, the wear is slow, and the replacement cycle is much longer than that of die-casting molds.

Is the ball guide sleeve suitable for die-casting molds? Die casting has a large impact and the ball bearings are prone to fatigue pitting corrosion, so die casting is rarely used.

What is the temperature resistance requirement for guiding grease? At least withstand temperatures of 300 ℃ or above to avoid carbonization caused by high temperature loss.
